Escape from Hong Kong: Oversized Resorts in Asia

A sense of privacy without compromise on space is the latest trend in luxury resort experiences around the region

It is no secret that Hong Kong’s most prized possession is property, and the scarcity of land goes a long way towards explaining cramped apartments and relatively small houses and mansions at exorbitant prices. So, where to go when you need some space to breathe? At the following resorts, a lack of personal space is never something you have to worry about, with even entry-level rooms clocking in at excessively generous sizes. Even better, some augment the luxurious experience with a setting to remember, such as rooms perched over water or hanging by the cliff-side for sweeping views.

Phuket

The traditional Southern Thailand winter getaway for Hong Kongers has lost none of its allure with its proliferation of reliable resorts. However, a slew of new luxury accommodation have opened all over the tiny island, from the traditionally neglected area of Maikhao up north, to mini islands in the vicinity, offering an even grander experience. The boutique 22-villa property Maikhao Dream Villa Resort & Spa (pictured above) offers two-bedroom villas, starting at 457 sqm with beachfront access and landscaped verdant private terraces with a plunge pool and outdoor jacuzzi. A private retreat, the tropical pool villa at The Naka Island, situated a short ferry ride from Phuket on Naka Yai Island and now managed by Starwood’s Luxury Collection, starts with one-bedroom options ranging from 350 to 450 sqm.

To stick with more traditional locations such as the Kamala headland and Surin, dubbed Millionaire’s Mile, the Dr. Allan Zeman-owned Andara Resort & Villas (pictured above) provides both spacious suites and private villa options, with the latter starting at 1,300 sqm including a large infinity pool that looks out over the Andaman, and naturally accompanied by a private chef and dedicated housekeeping staff.

Bali

The “island of the Gods” hosts some of Asia’s finest resorts, concentrated around the teardrop peninsula that juts out south of Denpasar, with most hugging the coasts of Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Uluwatu and Seminyak. The garden view pool villa at Banyan Tree Ungasan comprises 403 sqm of living space, replete with a 10-metre infinity pool, jet pool and a balé.

Situated by the cliff with protruding sunset cabanas ideal for a romantic dinner or cocktails, the design- and environmentally-conscious Alila Villas Uluwatu (pictured above) presents 291 sqm of space to frolic in, consisting of a private plunge pool and a cabana. Its former sister property, Soori Bali, even further northwest on the island past multiple rice paddies and fronting a unique volcanic black sand beach, provides similar accommodation in its 290 sqm one-bedroom mountain pool villa, comprising indoor and outdoor spaces with the private pool fringed by lawns and a lounge pavilion.

Maldives

The go-to destination for honeymooners and those celebrating special occasions, this archipelago of idyllic islands provides contemporary comforts in a breathtaking natural setting. While not traditionally the first destination that comes to mind with space to spare, the trendier resorts that have most recently opened offer untold modern luxury without compromising on a Maldivian or tropical feel, all while reducing the number of room keys but increasing the scope of the rooms that they keep.

A special feature at one of the most anticipated recent resort openings, the LVHM-managed Cheval Blanc Randheli (pictured above) is its private 12.5-metre long infinity pool that accompanies the open-design 295 sqm to 355 sqm island villas, as well as every villa in the proceeding category in the maison – a very welcome departure from the more common baby-sized plunge pools found in other resorts on the island. At the 258 sqm beach pool villas at Anantara Kihavah Villas, the focus is all on romance and privacy, as the circular sunken bathtub that sits on a shallow pond outdoors and acts as the centrepiece at the end of the oversized bathroom. Melding style with nature, W Retreat & Spa Maldives also presents ample living space, with the two-level beach villas starting at 178 sqm, primarily composed of the 118 sqm outdoor lower deck that promises a plunge pool and several loungers and outdoor daybeds.
